TOKYO FILMeX Competition Jury

This year's TOKYO FILMeX Competition will present 10 new films by the best emerging filmmakers in Asia. The Jury that consists of five international film professionals will judge the films in this program, and the following prizes will be announced at the closing ceremony on the evening of November 29th.

SAI Yoichi
(Japan, Korea / Filmmaker)

Born in 1949, After working as an assistant director in films such as "In the Realm of Senses (Ai no corrida)" (1976) directed by OSHIMA Nagisa, his made his sensational directorial debut in 1983 with "Jukkai no Mosquito" which was invited to Venice Film Festival. His 1993 film "All Under the Moon (Tsuki wa dotchi ni dete iru)", won all the major film awards in Japan making him an important director in Japanese film industry. His films include "Doing Time" (02), the major box-office success "Quill" (03), and "Blood and Bones" (04) starring KITANO Takeshi, where he won Best Director at the Japanese Academy Awards.
His latest, "KAMUI"(09) is screened in the Toronto International Film Festival.

LOU Ye
(China / Filmmaker)

Born 1965 in Shanghai. Entered the Department of Directing at Beijing Film Academy in 1985 and graduated in 1989. Directed his first feature length film, "Weekend Lover," in 1993 and in 1998 established the production company, Dream Factory. The first produced work, "Suzhou River," (00) won the Tiger Award at the International Film Festival Rotterdam and the Grand Prize at TOKYO FILMeX 2000. Directed "Purple Butterfly" (03) starring ZHANG Ziyi and NAKAMURA Toru. This film as well as the following "Summer Palace" (06) were consecutively selected to screen jn Competition at the Cannes Film Festival. His latest, "Spring Fever," (09) is the third film screened in the Cannes' Competition and won the Award for Best Screenplay. His other major works include the television feature, "Don't Be Young" (95).


Giovanna FULVI
(Italy / Asian Cinema Programmer for the Toronto International Film Festival)

She is the Asian Cinema Programmer for the Toronto International Film Festival since 2002.She is responsible for discovering and introducing audiences to the newest films and filmmakers of Asian cinema from countries such as China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Korea and Japan. She is based in Italy and currently works as a programming consultant for the International Film Festival Rotterdam and for the Torino Film Festival. Along with her various programming duties, she worked as a film consultant and acquisitions manager from 1992 for various organizations, and she is presently head of acquisitions for Filmauro in Rome, Italy. In 1997, Fulvi worked as a production assistant for Alan MILLER's documentary on the Italian production of Opera "Turandot," staged by ZHANG Yimou. In addition, she worked on Bernardo BERTOLUCCI's, "The Last Emperor" as a researcher for historical and cultural accuracy.


Jean Francois RAUGER
(France / Program director of the Cinematheque francaise, Film Critic)

Born 1959 in Stasbourg, France. Studied political science at university and was responsible for research at the National Centre of Cinematography (CNC) from 1984 to 1988. Entered the Cinematheque Francaise in 1992 where he served as program director. Wrote reviews for the magazine, "La Revue du cinema Image et Son" from 1986 until 1992, as well as for "Cahiers du cinema" from 1992 to 1995. Has been a regular author for the paper, "Le Monde" since 1995. Taught at the University of Paris III from 1989 to 1993. Has written books on Delmar DAVES, Jack ARNOLD, Lucio FULCI, among others.


CHEN Shiang-chyi
(Taiwan / Actress)

CHEN Shiang-Chyi is the most popular actress in Taiwan nowadays. She started to learn ballet, Beijing opera, and acting from 1975 and appeared in several films before she moved to the United States to study acting. She appeared in director Edward Yang's《A Brighter Summer Day》(1990) and《A Confucian Confusion》(1994). From 1994, she began her study in Educational Theatre at New York University. After acquiring her Master's Degree, she came back to Taiwan and started her career as a director of plays while continuing as an actress. In 1996, she came back to starring in feature films with Tsai Ming-Liang's《The River》(1997). She has been a prolific actress starring in both Taiwan films as well as films from overseas.

"Face (Visages)", in which she took a role, will be screened as opening film.
