This special program spotlights at the works of French “Film Noir” filmmaker Jean-Pierre MELVILLE (1917-1973). Not only He was a pioneer of the movement of “Nouvelle Vague” with Jean-Luc Godard and Francois Truffaut, but also his aesthetic and unusual filming has had great influence on world filmmakers; Quentin TARANTINO, Johnnie TO, KITANO Takeshi , and so on.
Up to now, we’ve never had a chance to close up MELVILLE and his films in Japan, although his name was engraved on film history with still brilliantly shine. This initial programme is long-awaited one for film fans. L’Institut and TOKYO FILMeX bring you this special program of 13 films which include 3 debut films in Japan. In addition, we present “Code Name Melville (2008, Dir. Olivier BOHLER)” which is a documentary film about MELVILLE.
