Ryoko, in the Unfaithful Evening
Takashi Ujita Interview

Q. Mr. Ujita, you made this film while you were at the Osaka Fine Arts University Graduate School.

A. Originally, I wanted to carry out this project as an independent film, but my school was offering film tools so it turned to be a part of the curriculum after entering graduate school. There is a film department at Osaka Fine Arts University, and directors such as Sadao Nakajima are teaching as an instructor. In order to graduate, you either submit a thesis paper or a film piece (film, commercial, experimental film). The students have the rights to these pieces.

Q. The set up of this film is a very unique family drama

A. I have always liked family drama, especially those in which a father works hard. But I didnft think it was possible for me to make a typical home drama, so I chose a lazy father, which is opposite to the regular set up. My own father was someone who never showed his weak side, so maybe I had a sort of aspiration toward an opposite father figure.

Q. Please tell us about the actors, especially the one who played the father whose presence had a strong impact.

A. Junichi Koga who played the father is a carpenter and has no acting experience. He was the only one I had in mind while writing the script. I asked Hotaru Hazuki to participate because she was perfect for my image when I saw a flyer of one of the films she was in. As far as the other actors are concerned, they all have acting experience; Shunsuke Sawada was in Kichiku, Kahori Kawashima belongs to an agency in Osaka, and Toto Ogawa is active on the stage. I wish to work with people who can bring out their life style, regardless of being professional or amateur.
