Director:T’ANG Shushuen

The directorial debut and signature work of female director T’ang Shushuen, who studied at the University of Southern California. It was also the first film produced outside the established Hong Kong film industry and released as an independent work. Set in 17th-century China, it tells the story of Madam Tong, who, after her husband’s death, continues to serve his family but is torn between her feelings for a soldier staying at her home and the moral code valuing chastity. The film was screened at the first Directors' Fortnight at the 1969 Cannes Film Festival and won four awards at the 1971 Golden Horse Awards, including Best Actress.

Director:T’ANG Shushuen

T'ang Shushuen (Hong Kong, born 1938) grew up in HongKong and graduated from the University of Southern California Department of Cinema in the United States. Her debut feature,The Arch(1968), was the first film made outside the industry and independently released in HongKong. It was also the first Hong Kong film to be shown at several European and American film festivals, where it received much critical acclaim. After The Arch, T'ang made three more films―China Behind(1974),Sup Sap Bup Dup(1975), andThe Hong Kong Tycoon(1979). In 1975, shefounded the film publicationClose Up, which later becameFilm Biweekly. She relocated to the United States in 1979.
