Hong Kong / 1979 / 88min
Director:Peter YUNG

This is the feature directorial debut of Peter Yung, who was active as a cinematographer and a pioneer of independent cinema. The film thrillingly depicts a narcotics enforcement officer, played by Ying Bai—a regular in King Hu’s films—who uses various schemes and tactics to pursue the arrest of a drug kingpin. Drawing on his experience in documentary filmmaking, the film realistically portrays the complex relationships and struggles between the police, informants, and drug dealers, making it a groundbreaking crime drama.

Director:Peter YUNG

Peter Yung (Hong Kong, born 1949) was already a renowned photographer when he came to specialise in making documentaries on the drug trade in the 1970s.TheSystem is his debut feature on the same topic, with a strong documentarian influence in both form and content. The film is unprecedented in its thorough understanding of the drug trade and its nuanced portrayal of the various individuals I involved.
Yung is unique among his generation of Hong Kong filmmakers as a pioneer and an independent director who often produced his own films. In the history of Hong Kong cinema,The System is a special example of merging tragic pathos and investigative journalism with a raw shooting style. Yung's other works includeLife After Life (1981),TheRickshaw Boy (1982), andWarlords of the Golden Triangles(1987), continuing his exploration of drug-related themes.
