Fren, a HR officer, interviews countless numbers of new employees everyday. Through these interviews, she observes various paths of lives and ways of thinking very closely. One day Fren discovers that she is pregnant.

Fren, an HR officer, discovers she is in the early stages of pregnancy. At work, she hires “disposable” new grads for low-paid, long-hour labor. At home, she hears the news endlessly reporting the climate emergency and the societal decline. Fren’s isolation accelerates as her wish for her child’s better future erodes, choicelessly, in a situation where her company structure sees an individual as a consumable and women’s self-determination is not guaranteed in the family or society. The film removes the exotic elements and illustrates the cold reality she faces, with realism and restrained tone. It is a work marked by cinematic richness and meticulous attention to every corner of the frame, coupled with a sharp gaze on the modern society in which we live. The film made its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival’s Orizzonti program.

Director:Nawapol THAMRONGRATTANARIT

Born in Bangkok in 1984, he debuted with “36” (2012), winner of Busan’s New Currents Award. Moving fluidly between independent and commercial cinema, he has directed “Mary Is Happy, Mary Is Happy” (2013), “The Master” (2014), “Heart Attack” (2015), “Die Tomorrow” (2017), and “Happy Old Year” (2019), which won the Grand Prix at Osaka Asian Film Festival. “Human Resource” (2025) is his ninth feature.

Director’s statement

Apart from death, the act of bringing a new life into the world compels us to reflect on the true meaning of life and its connections to family, society, the economy, politics, religion, and science. In the past decade, the decline in birth rates in many parts of the world reflects a shared sentiment of people in this era. HUMAN RESOURCE is a film that explores and captures contemporary human life, the shifting definition of family, and existence in a world that will never be the same again.
