TOKYO FILMeX 2003 presents a retrospective of master Japanese director SHIMIZU Hiroshi (1903-1966), celebrating the 100th anniversary of his birth. All films in this section will be screened with English subtitles.
A major force at Shochiku Studios before and during World War II, and a pioneer in independent film after the war ended, he made a total of 163 films. Praised by OZU and MIZOGUCHI, SHIMIZU preferred improvised direction to artifice, and his free-minded films brim with joy, often featuring children and location photography. 10 works of SHIMIZU will be shown, including 3 brand new prints, as a special program co-organized with National Film Center(The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo), in association with Shochiku, Kokusai Hoei, Planet Bibliotheque de Cinema, in cooperation with The Japan Foundation, Kawakita Memorial Film Institute.
