Iran / Director

Born in 1957 in Saveh, the central part of Iran. He started making films independently in the middle of 1970s. In 1979, he entered the Iranian TV(IRIB) to make some short films and documentaries. In 1983, he directed his first feature film "Milad". With his third film "Scabies"(87), he confirmed his original style and his fourth film "Det Means Girl"(94) won the golden Osella Award at the Venice Film Festival in 1995. In 1998, "Dance of Dust", which had been banned from screening for seven years, won the Silver Leopard Award at the Locarno International Film Festival. He won as well the Special Jury Prize at the TOKYO FILMeX 2001 for "Delbaran". His Latest film is "Hafez" (in production), which features Japanese actress ASO Kumiko.

 NISHIJIMA Hidetoshi NISHIJIMA Hidetoshi
Japan / Actor

Nishijima was born in 1971 in Tokyo. He received international attention for his performances in SUWA Nobuhiro's "2/DUO" (97) and KUROSAWA Kiyoshi's "License to live" (98). He played the leading role in KITANO Takeshi's "Dolls" selected in the competition of the Venice International Film Festival in 2002. Having a powerful presence as an actor, he appears in many films. His filmography includes NAKATA Hideo's "Last Scene" (02), SHIOTA Akihiko's "Canary" (04) and HAGIUDA Koji's "Going Home" (04) and KUROSAWA Kiyoshi's latest film "LOFT (working title)" (05).

Fred KELEMEN Fred KELEMEN
Germany / Director

Born in 1964. In 1989 he entered the German Film & TV Academy in Berlin and in 1990 made his feature film debut with "Kalyi - Age of Darkness". While working as a director, he continued to serve as cinematographer and cameraman for filmmakers such as TARR Bela , Hector FAVER, Yesim USTAOGLU, and Garine TOROSSIAN. Additionally, he worked in Hanover directing for the stage. With films such as "Fate" ('94), "Frost" ('97/'98), and "Abendland" ('99), the works of Fred KELEMEN have won awards at many international film festivals. Retrospectives of his work have been shown in cities around the world, including Lisbon, Brussels, and New York.

Mariann LEWINSKY Mariann LEWINSKY
Switzerland / Film Historian, Curator

After first professional life as a numismatist, she earned the M.A. in Japanese Language and Literature, PhD in Cinema studies.
Organized since 1986 many retrospectives, taught at Zurich University and published widely as a film critic and a scholar. Presents Japanese cinema in Europe and transmits early European cinema to the present. Director of film restoration projects in Switzerland, board member and curator of programms for the Bologna Festival IL CINEMA RITROVATO. Publications and retrospectives on Avant-garde and Silent Cinema in Japan, on KIDO Shiro, SUZUKI Seijun and all the major classic Japanese directors, on Asta NIELSEN, Frieda GRAFE, Leonce PERRET, the Year 1905 and many others.

In 1963 co-founder and since then active member of the association "Friends of the German Cinematheque". Programmer and organizer for the Arsenal cinema since its foundation in 1970. From 1971 to 2004 member of selection committee of the International Forum of New Cinema of the Berlin Film Festival. Festival organizer and coordinator, member of festival juries and film funding commissions. Curating of retrospectives, national and thematic film programmes ("Jewish Lifestyles", "Japan and Europe", "Moscow-Berlin" etc) in the Eighties and Nineties. Publication of books and catalogues of the ongoing series "Kinemathek" (99 issues up to now, last issues on Satyajit RAY, Yasujiro OZU and IM Kwon-taek).
