Special Program
This special program spotlights at the works of innovative Brazilian filmmaker Joaquim Pedro de ANDRADE (1932-1988). 2008 marks the 100th anniversary of Japanese immigration to Brazil, and friendship between the two countries is thriving. This program will screen ANDRADE's films for the first time ever in Japan, where there are few opportunities to experience Brazilian cinema. In the 1950s and 60s, a new cinema movement influenced by Italian neorealism and the French Nouvelle Vague emerged in Brazil called Cinema Novo. ANDRADE was one of its exponents, along with Nelson Pereira dos SANTOS and Glauber ROCHA. In recent years these films have come to be reappraised internationally, and at the 2006 Venice Film Festival a specially compiled retrospective of digitally restored works drew attention to their unique style. This also screened at the New York Film Festival in 2007, and of these highly provocative masterpieces we present a diverse selection that includes features, documentaries and short films (five works in total).
