The Great Cinema Party
Korea, Philippines / 2012 / 70 min.
Dir. Raya MARTIN
[Introduction]
This film begins with archival images of a fierce battle between Japanese and American forces during the Pacific War. Before long, in the present day, a group of filmmakers of various nationalities arrive on Corregidor Island in Manila Bay, and we see them inspect the remains of a fortress used in the battle. They then visit an old mansion that is said to have been used as a location for silent films and television shows. Before long, a party begins... This work fully harnesses the unique talents of Raya MARTIN, known for his experimental approach in works such as "Now Showing"(08) which was compiled from home movie-style footage. The people at the party include some of the Philippines' foremost filmmakers in Lav DIAZ, Brilliante MENDOZA, and John TORRES, as well as Cinema Scope film critic Mark PERAN-SON.
