Room 514 / Heder 514
Israel / 2011 / 90 min.
Director: Sharon BAR-ZIV
[Introduction]
The protagonist is Anna, a female Israeli military police investigator. Looking into a case in which an Arab family was subjected to excessive violence, Anna interrogates Commander DAVIDI who is thought to be involved, but DAVIDI denies the charge. She is warned by Erez, her superior officer with whom she is romantically involved, to withdraw from the case, but Anna pushes ahead toward unravelling the truth....... Within its extreme confines, Sharon BAR-ZIV's directorial debut, "Room 514," spotlights Israel's complex circumstances, a woman's standing in the military, and many other issues. Except for the bus seen in Anna's commute, the setting is entirely restricted to room 514. This will serve not only as the primary objective's interrogation room, but also a place in which Anna's personal problems are exposed. While clearly being a film produced on a small budget, this is a masterpiece which has harvested a cinematic bounty at many levels from the perfect performances by the actors, including Asia NAIFELD who plays Anna, to the frequently used close-ups of the outstanding camera work. Screened at the Rotterdam International Film Festival, Tribeca Film Festival among others.
