An adaptation of OOKA Shohei's novel that depicts the itinerant Japanese army in the Philippines during the final phase of World War II from the viewpoint of a single private, and stresses the horrors of war. This tour de force shocked audiences with its intense battle scenes when it received its world premiere in competition at the Venice Film Festival.

Received voluminous praise after it opened the Venice Film Festival's Orizzonti sidebar.

The new film by TSAI Ming-liang was screened at the Berlin International Film Festival. Acting as a Buddhist monk, frequent cast member of TSAI's films LEE Kang-sheng walks very slowly through the coastline and city streets of Marseille in southern France. Denis LAVANT, who gained notability through Leos CARAX's "Holy Motors", also stars.
