Special Program (3) Nicholas RAY 1911-2011

We Can't Go Home Again
USA / 1973-2011 / 93 min.
Dir. Nicholas RAY
[Introduction]
Nicolas RAY directed this, his final feature, when he was invited to lecture at the State University of New York's Binghamton School of film studies using his students as cast and staff. Forgoing a coherent narrative, the film is constructed of fragmented imagery incorporating both fictional and documentary elements. Furthermore, with scenes where several visuals are superimposed, it is a radical work reminiscent of modern video art. Rather than a master's compilation, the film will most likely be called a masterpiece that attempted to advance into completely unknown territory in the final years of a career. Components dynamically influenced by the American political climate at the time are also worthy of note. The film was screened at the 1973 Cannes Film Festival, however RAY continued additional filming and editing afterward; he passed away without completing the film. Tokyo FILMeX is presenting a digitally restored version of the 1976 edit of the film that was premiered at this year's Venice Film Festival.
