Director: Jafar PANAHI, Mojtaba MIRTAHMASB
[Introduction]
On March 1, 2010, Jafar PANAHI, known for such films as "The White Balloon" and "Offside" was arrested by the Iranian government. He was later released, but was prohibited from making films, traveling abroad or communicating with the media. "This is Not a Film" was shot in PANAHI's home in March of this year, one year following his arrest. The first half of the film portrays PANAHI's everyday life, shot by co-director Mojtaba MIRTAHMASB, and from the thrust of their conversation, emphasizes the severity of PANAHI's current situation. On that day, MIRTAHMASB must leave to be with his children to celebrate Chaharshanbe Suri, the last Wednesday prior to the New Year of the Iranian calendar. As a result, PANAHI is left alone in the room.... At first glance, the film retains a documentary form, but it is how a variety of abundantly creative elements keep the viewer engaged that is outstanding. This masterpiece can be interpreted as PANAHI's assertion that he will continue making films, no matter the situation.
