Arirang / Arirang
South Korea / 2011 / 91 min.
Director: KIM Ki-Duk
[Introduction]
After cutting off all contact with the South Korean film world in recent years, KIM Ki-duk breaks his long silence since "Dream" with this personal documentary that shows his day-to-day life at a secluded house in the mountains. He eventually faces the camera, and begins to talk about the various circumstances that have befallen him in the past few years. We are exposed to his distress at the completely different reception given to his work in South Korea compared to overseas, and the raw treatment meted out to him by the film industry, which he had no choice but to suffer in silence. However, this is not a mere vehicle for KIM to air his grievances on film. A second version of himself emerges to challenge his impassioned statements, and then a third KIM appears to observe their dialogue via a monitor, as he flips his own words from an objective standpoint and employs ingenious ideas throughout to entertain the viewer. In this sense that it transforms his predicament into entertainment, this is an unprecedented masterpiece. Screened in the Cannes Film Festival's Un Certain Regard category, where it took top prize.
