KOTOKO
Japan / 2011 / 91min.
Dir. TSUKAMOTO Shinya
[Introduction]
Kotoko raises her young son Daijiro on her own, and loves him to excess. Consequently, she becomes obsessed with the idea that he could be kidnapped or die in an accident, and suffers from hallucinations. The only time she is able to regain her composure is when she sings. One day, Kotoko is approached by a stranger. He has been captivated by her music, and the sight of her singing. Eventually, they begin to live together, but... "Kotoko," the latest from TSUKAMOTO Shinya, is a masterwork that evokes the fragility and resilience of motherhood with intensity and lyricism. The character of Kotoko is played by singer-songwriter Cocco, in her first lead role in a theatrical film. TSUKAMOTO, who had wanted to make a film featuring Cocco for several years, carried out a series of interviews with her that formed the basis for the story, which delves into her inner self. As its primary focus is a mother's love for her child, one could say it suggests new possibilities for his filmmaking. Screened at this year's Venice International Film Festival, where it won the top award in the Orizzonti section.
