Director: Amir NADERI
[Introduction]
New York-based Iranian filmmaker Amir NADERI's latest work is his first shot on location in Japan. Its protagonist is a young film director named Shuji, who produces his own work independently with the financial support of his older brother. One day he is summoned to the offices of a yakuza gang, and is told that his brother, who had resorted to borrowing money from them to pay for Shuji's films, has died. To pay back his debts, Shuji ends up becoming a human punching bag for hire... "Cut" references a wide array of films within an atmosphere reminiscent of Hollywood film noir, as signified by the yakuza office converted from a boxing gym. The seemingly possessed character of Shuji harks back to NADERI'S protagonists from his Iranian films such as "The Runner" through to his previous work "Vegas: Based on a True Story." NISHIJIMA Hidetoshi gives a powerful performance as Shuji, and TOKIWA Takako recasts her image in the role of the heroine, Yoko. Selected as the opening film of the Venice International Film Festival's Orizzonti section.
