Director: CAI Shangjun
[Introduction]
The protagonist is Tie, a middle-aged man living in the Guizhou Province of southern China. Forced to pay reparations for a serious injury to a co-worker at a rock quarry, Tie is beset by a new tragedy―his younger brother murdered by someone. The suspect, Xiao, has escaped and the police are not actively searching for his whereabouts. Tie resolves to search for Xiao himself and goes to hunt down the killer in the city of Chongquin with the help of a friend, but does not obtain any leads. Before long, he hears a rumor that Xiao has gone into hiding at a northern coal mine. Tie heads north alone.... As the film follows Tie's actions in searching for the whereabouts of his brother's killer, China's other state of affairs is vividly depicted via a poor mountain village in Guizhou Province, slums in the metropolis of Chongquin, coal mines under severe conditions, and other downsides to the country's unprecedented economic growth. Tie is portrayed by CHEN Jianbin who has played CAO Cao in the "Three Kingdoms" television drama and also appeared in "24 City." A surprise film at this year's Venice Film Festival, where it commendably won the Silver Lion for Best Director.
