Old Dog / Khyi Rgan
China / 2011 / 88 min.
Director: Pema Tseden
[Introduction]
The main characters are an old man who owns an aged Tibetan Mastiff and his son. As Tibetan Mastiffs sell at high prices to wealthy Chinese, the son is going to sell his father's old dog to a merchant. The disapproving old man forcibly brings the dog back when it is sold, but now a dognapper intends to steal it. Finally, clinging to a single resolve, the old man sets out for the grasslands with the aging mastiff.... The third feature-length work by Tibetan director Pema Tseden, "Old Dog" is a powerful film expressing the present state of Tibet proceeding with urban expansion while placing emphasis on a story of a stubborn old man's relationship with his dog. Just as the title suggests, this is a film about a human and a dog. At the same time, however, it is a film concerning the pride of Tibetan people who are attempting to resist the tide toward modernization. The world premiere screening was held at the Hong Kong International Film Festival where it won the Gold Digital Award in the Asian Digital Competition. Furthermore, it won three awards including the principal Red Chameleon Award at the Cinema Digital Seoul Film Festival in South Korea.
