Mr.Tree / Hello! Shu Xian Sheng
China / 2011 / 88 min.
Director: HAN Jie
[Introduction]
The protagonist is Shu, a young man living in a mining village enshrouded by snow. His friends are reasonably successful while the bachelor Shu works at a car repair shop. He lost his father and older brother when he was a boy, which often crosses his mind as nightmares. The village changes everyday through the mining company's city planning, and people move away one after the other. Shu as well, relying on an old friend, goes to work at a neighboring city where he falls in love at first sight with Xiao Mei who works at a massage parlor. Steeling himself, Shu proposes to Xiao Mei and they marry but.... HAN Jie's long-awaited second film following "Walk on the Wild Side" uses a young protagonist to depict the rapidly advancing urbanization of China's suburbs. Popular actor, WANG Baoqiang, known for "A World Without Thieves," etc., superbly performs the complicated character of Shu. JIA Zhangke serves as producer. Screened at the Shanghai International Film Festival where it won the Golden Goblet Award Jury Grand Prix and Best Director Award.
