Bachelor Mountain / 光棍
China / 2011 / 96 min.
Director: YU Guangyi
[Introduction]
The third film by YU Guangyi, following "Timber Gang" and "Survival Song," is another documentary following the lives of people living in the mountains of Heilongjiang in China. This time his focus is 46-year-old SAN Liangzi, who lost his wife 12 years ago and has now lost his job as a lumberjack. He is single and leads a lonely existence, but has held a torch for 10 years for inn worker Meizi, the only unmarried woman in his village. She is his reason for living, but does not reciprocate his affection. In fact, Meizi has no interest in men... Although YU addresses social change resulting from development as he has done in his previous works, this time he pays more attention to capturing the emotions of individuals, producing a unique film that could be described as something like a love story. It is also a fascinating acknowledgment of gender issues in Chinese mountain villages.
