The Journals of Musan / Musanilgi
South Korea / 2010 / 127 min.
Director: PARK Jung-bum
[Introduction]
The feature-length directorial debut by PARK Jung-bum, LEE Chang-dong's former assistant director, "The Journals of Musan" is a surprisingly realistic depiction of a young man's daily life after immigrating from North to South Korea. The main character, Seung-chul, is a North Korean defector living in Seoul. His friend, roommate and fellow defector Kyung-chul earns a living through fraudulent means while Seung-chul lives meagerly by putting up posters and passing out handbills. A white dog abandoned by a shepherd is his heart's only comfort. Soon, he begins working at the karaoke bar where Sook-young, a girl he sees in church, is employed. However, he is fired for making trouble with the customers.... The film sketches the harsh realities confronted by North Korean defectors living in South Korea from multiple viewpoints. Worthy of note is the film's true-to-life depictions such as the palpable cold of Seoul's winter air. PARK Jung-bum himself portrays Seung-chul with a unique presence. The film naturally won awards at Busan, Rotterdam, and various other film festivals.
