Flying Fish / Igillena Maluwo
Sri Lanka / 2011 / 124 min.
Director: Sanjeewa PUSHPAKUMARA
[Introduction]
Set in an eastern Sri Lankan village during an age of civil war between Sinhalese and Tamils, "Flying Fish" is composed from the stories of three people. The first is 23-year-old Wasana. She becomes pregnant to her older boyfriend, a soldier, but he leaves her for a faraway posting... The second is a 15-year-old boy who works in a fish market to support his family after the death of his father. His 37-year-old mother repeatedly meets in secret with her younger lover, driving the boy to fury when he finds them together... The third is a 13-year-old Tamil girl. One day the anti-government Tamil Tigers come to her home and demand money from her parents, threatening to conscript her if they do not pay. They are poor and cannot do so, so on the night of the payment deadline, the girl attempts to run away on her own... With its beautiful imagery and searing depictions of violence, this stunning directorial debut by Sri Lankan sensation Sanjeewa PUSHPAKUMARA is an explosion of anger toward the human degradation caused by civil war.
