Poongsan / Poongsan
South Korea / 2011 / 121 min.
Director: JUHN Jai-hong
[Introduction]
This film's protagonist, a man who traverses the North Korean border delivering messages and keepsakes, receives a request from a South Korean intelligence agency: help In-oak, the lover of a high-ranking North Korean defector, escape to the south. As they cross the border after overcoming numerous difficulties they begin to fall in love, but when the defector learns of this he hands the man over to the intelligence agency. They torture him, then make an offer. They will free him and In-oak if he completes another mission for them: bring back one of their agents who has infiltrated the north. Once again, the man heads for the border.... "Poongsan," the second directorial effort of JUHN Jai-hong, a former assistant director to KIM Ki-duk (who produced and wrote this film), exposes the complicated issues affecting relations between the two Koreas in the form of entertainment. Although shot on a short schedule with a small budget, one would never guess based on its quality. The title refers to a North Korean dog breed, and is the nickname given to the protagonist.
